Replacing a lost registration
To replace a lost registration
- Visit any motor vehicle agency - owner or co-owner - with acceptable proof of age and identification (driver license). Important note: a notarized statement of consent from the vehicle owner is required to authorize sale of a replacement registration to someone who is not the titled owner or co-owner appearing in person at an agency
- Present a NJ insurance identification card or receipt from a previous registration or title transaction
- Complete Form BA-49, available in agencies Please Note: Where vehicle ownership is shared, both the owner and co-owner will need to sign form BA-49.
- Pay duplicate registration fee:
- $5 for one year passenger/commercial registration
- $5 for the last year of four year accelerated registration
- $11 anytime during the first three years of a four year accelerated registration
Replacing a lost registration, leased vehicle
- Contact your leasing company for legal permission to obtain a duplicate registration. Power of Attorney (POA) must include:
- Lessee name (person leasing vehicle)
- Statement authorizing lessee to sign application
- VIN#, year, make and model of vehicle
- Visit any motor vehicle agency with acceptable proof of age and identification (driver license)
- Present a NJ insurance identification card or receipt from a previous registration or title transaction
- Provide the original copy of POA. Leasing companies may also fax permission directly to any agency. For fax numbers, call (888) 486-3339 toll-free in New Jersey or (609) 292-6500 from out of state
- Complete registration form BA-49, available in agencies
- Pay duplicate registration fee
