In September 2011, New Jersey will open its first public school with dual-language immersion in Chinese and English. The K-12 Princeton International Academy Charter School will be the third public school in New Jersey offering dual-language immersion, including a Spanish/English school in Hoboken and a Hebrew/English school in East Brunswick. The Princeton International Academy Charter School (PIACS) will serve the residents of Princeton Regional, South Brunswick and West Windsor-Plainsboro Regional. But it can also accept up to 10 percent of its enrolled students from outside these districts. New Jersey’s new Chinese immersion charter school is part of a trend sweeping the nation driven by “a national commitment to strengthening America's foreign language proficiency,” CIA director Leon Panetta said at a Foreign Language Summit held in December.
