The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, one of the country's longest-running award and recognition programs for creative teenagers, announced the winners of its 2012 competition on March 20. Among the 15 high school students from across the country who received a Portfolio Gold Award, the highest level of achievement that includes a $10,000 cash scholarship, was artist Batrek Yassa, a senior at Jersey City Arts High School. On June 1, Yassa and fellow winners will be honored onstage at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Select award-winning art and writing will be exhibited at Parsons The New School for Design in Manhattan through June 16.
