August 30, 2012 — Higher Standards in Perth Amboy

The city of Perth Amboy is adopting an innovative approach to science and mathematics education developed by the New Jersey Center for Teaching and Learning, a nonprofit organization created by the state Department of Education. The 10,000-student district will completely overhaul the way it teaches math and science in elementary, middle and high school. The plan is to bring its math curriculum in line with common core state standards and increase its participation and passing rates on Advanced Placement science and math exams. “We are ready to raise expectations for all our students,” said Perth Amboy superintendent Janine Walker Caffrey.
