When it comes to scholarships, there's a limited amount of available cash to go around, and an organization wants to be sure that its money makes a big, positive impact. That's why Heather Collura, who graduated from Roxbury High School in June 2004, and was named the 2004 New Jersey High School Journalist of the Year by the Garden State Scholastic Press Association, was chosen by the New Jersey Press Foundation to receive the $5,000 Bernard Kilgore Memorial Scholarship.
"My high school advisor told me about the scholarship," says Heather, who's 18 and a freshman at Syracuse University in the Journalism program. "I was asked to submit a portfolio of my work and also wrote a personal statement explaining why I think journalism is important." Heather was probably helped by the fact that she was the editor-in-chief of her school paper and went on to do a summer internship at a local weekly paper.
