Fact Sheet - Hurricane Irene Assistance Provided By New Jersey Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) And Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) Volunteers

CERT & MRC Volunteers Worked A Total Of 41,941 Hours Supporting Hurricane Irene Emergency Response Efforts In New Jersey

The entire state of New Jersey was impacted by Hurricane Irene when it made landfall in the southern part of the state as a Category 1 hurricane on August 28, 2011. Governor Christie declared a State of Emergency on August 25, 2011. Voluntary, then mandatory, evacuation efforts commenced almost immediately to help prepare for storm-related problems. Contra-flow (“reverse lane”) roadway evacuations facilitated the safe evacuation of approximately 1 million residents from shore area communities. Flooding, blocked roadways, electrical power outages, sheltering responsibilities, medical assistance requests, and clean-up operations placed an extreme burden on the state’s first responder community.
