N.J. Ratepayer Advocate Urges Consumers to Renew Conservation Efforts
Now For To Prepare For Higher Winter Heating Bills

Newark, N.J.—New Jersey Ratepayer Advocate Seema M. Singh today urged consumers to renew their efforts for conservation as natural gas and other energy prices continue to rise.

“In light of continued increases in natural gas costs, I strongly encourage consumers to renew their conservation efforts now,” said Singh. “We unfortunately are all in for a very tough winter with higher heating bills.”

Singh commented that gas suppliers are regrettably forced to pass on the cost of higher natural gas costs they must pay in what has become a volatile gas market.

Singh suggests consumers consider taking the following actions:

• Use energy efficient heating appliances.

• Consider budget billing (contact your energy supplier for details).

• Be aware of financial assistance programs that can help pay for heating bills (many are listed on the Ratepayer Advocate website, www.rpa.state.nj.us). A few programs include: LIHEAP—(Low-income Home Energy Assistance Program)--- 800-510-3102 and N.J. SHARES (Statewide Heating Assistance and Referral for Energy)--866-657-4273.

• Winterize your home now. For example, check and repair storm windows and review insulation. Have your furnace serviced.

• Contact the Ratepayer Advocate office for the free Consumer Conservation Handbook, which is filled with money-saving energy tips. The book can be obtained by calling 973-648-2690 or visiting www.rpa.state.nj.us.
