Content Note

This series consists of two volumes, apparently compiled by the Adjutant General's office, which document military service in New Jersey during the Revolutionary War. The volumes were labeled respectively as Indents, Revolutionary War and New Jersey Line, Pay and Gratuity Book. It appears that the information was copied sometime in the mid- to late-nineteenth century from original materials held by or available to the Adjutant General's Office. The volumes may have been compiled in conjunction with research for General Stryker's Official Register of the Officers and Men of New Jersey in the Revolutionary War (1872). They were definitely compiled prior to 1906, as typescripts of some of the lists in the first volume were made that year and filed as "Revolutionary War Numbered Manuscripts" (citing that volume as the original source). Below are general descriptions of each volume followed by a detailed Contents list.

Item 1
As mentioned above, this book was originally referred to as Indents, Revolutionary War. The bulk of the volume (now disbound) is a county-by-county listing of New Jersey militiamen who were issued indents (also referred to as militia certificates) as result of "An act to procure an estimate of the sums due the Militia and troops who have been raised for the defence of the frontiers of the State" (Acts of the Eighth General Assembly of the State of New Jersey, chap. 20, p. 40, 1783). This law appointed commissioners for each county to determine what was owed the militia and issued each man a note indicating the payment due (see also series: Department of Treasury/ State Treasurer's Office/ Receipts and Registers for Interest paid on Revolutionary War Militia Indents, 1787-1796). The indent lists include the soldier's name (arranged semi-alphabetically), the indent number and amount, and sometimes the date issued. In addition, throughout the volume are a variety of transcripts of militia returns, muster rolls, and payrolls, including a few post-Revolutionary War lists. These generally provide a semi-alphabetical listing of men, the name of the commanding officer, and sometimes dates of service.

The lists in this volume are outlined below under Contents (referencing the stamped page numbers). They are divided into three sections: Revolutionary War militia indents, Other Revolutionary War lists, and Post-Revolutionary War lists. NOTE: The indents in this volume are indexed by the Revolutionary War cards and slips (referencing the stamped page numbers), although they are misidentified as depreciation notes. Most of the militia muster rolls and returns, however, do not appear to be indexed.
Item 2
As mentioned above, this volume was originally referred to as New Jersey Line, Pay and Gratuity Book. It contains lists documenting service in the New Jersey Continental Line — probably compiled from records in Washington, DC. Included are returns, payrolls, lists of wagonmasters, teamsters, surgeons and other noncombatants, as well as some commissary records. Most are simply semi-alphabetical listings of names, although some also record rank/title, years of service, and names of commanding officers. The commissary lists record the names of commanders who requested stores and goods, the commissaries who issued them, and the date the goods were issued. Included at the end of the volume is a loose page written by T. S. Slingerland of Schoharie Co., NY, containing notes on several New Jersey Revolutionary War soldiers. There are also several sections of blank pages in this volume. See the Contents section below for an outline of the lists included. NOTE: Pages 1-386 of this volume are indexed by the Revolutionary War slips and cards as "New Jersey Line." Some references for the commissary records (beginning on page 395) seem to have been included in the service slips; however, such entries are incomplete and do not clearly identify the source volume or page number.
