Content Note

Created by the legislature in 1981, the New Jersey Water Supply Authority is empowered "to acquire, finance, construct and operate water systems under certain circumstances, authorizing the issuance of bonds of the authority, and providing for the terms and security thereof." Included in the facilities managed by the Authority is the Delaware & Raritan Canal Transmission Complex, which supplies water for over 500,000 business and residential customers in Central New Jersey.

This New Jersey Water Supply Authority collection contains over 400 documents pertaining to the Delaware & Raritan Canal. These documents are all pre-1953, which is the year in which the canal was converted to a water supply facility. At that time, the Water Supply Authority prepared extensive new drawings of the canal and its structures. The largest portion of the collection is a set of maps of the entire canal (feeder and main canal), with notations describing the land transactions by which canal property was purchased. There are four sets, two each for the feeder and two each for the main canal.

In addition, the collection contains drawings for the construction of bridges, aqueducts, arches, spillways, a bulkhead, a tunnel, culverts, dams, a stop gate, mitre gates and the control structures which were built when the canal became a water supply system. Miscellaneous items include a stream survey, a land lease, an easement, cross-sections, recreation sites, repairs to breaks and a lock reconstruction.
