Special Events and Family Activities
Adults and Families can drop in for special events and gallery activities that bring the collections to life. From storytime to gallery activity carts to big public events, there is always something new to discover at the New Jersey State Museum!
Ongoing

Small Explorers Museum Family Guides Look for Scavenger Hunts on the wall in the Visitor Lobby upon your arrival to the Museum. We have several themes to choose from so your family can make a game out of visiting all the galleries for clues! Look for in-gallery activities located throughout the Museum, including a Natural History journal, making your own state seal, decorating a Paleolithic pot and much more!

Also available in the Visitor Lobby and the Discovery Den are Small Explorers Museum Family Guides. Designed with children ages 0-5 in mind, these picture cards depict objects in the collection along with questions to help our youngest visitors learn new words, explore and observe. Each card includes a recommended book you can find at your local library and an activity you can do at home.

Trenton Makes WORDS!
Trenton Makes—Words! is a community partnership between the New Jersey State Museum, The Children’s Home Society, and the Trenton Community Music School.

Our sessions foster fun, interactive experiences between parents/caregivers and children ages 0-5 and provide tips to enhance verbal interaction in your daily routine. These learning opportunities complement your parenting efforts to make sure your children have the learning and social skills they’ll need when they begin kindergarten. Visit our website to choose the location day and time that works best for you.
To learn more about these and other new programs for Trenton parents and children ages 0-5 visit www.TrentonMakesWords.org or “like” our Facebook page.
Storytime
Join us on the 3rd weekend of every month for a story and a craft activity. Story time is always at 2:00 pm. Stories relate to current exhibits and collections and are always entertaining. Crafts are simple and a great way to remember the fun you had at the Museum!

Story time is designed for families with children ages 3 to 8. For more information contact Jeffrey Arico at (609) 292-1382.

Swimmy
Swimmy
June 17 and 18, 2017

This classic tale and Caldecott Honor award winner from famed children’s book author Leo Lionni is a delightful way to welcome summer! Explore ocean life with Swimmy, the little black fish in a school of red fish. After the story, families can learn more about ocean life on the shores of New Jersey with activities throughout the Discovery Den. Make a fish craft to take home.
