Pereira Named Acting MVS Director

Transportation Commissioner James Weinstein today announced that Lino F. Pereira, a professional engineer and former assistant commissioner at the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, has been named acting director of New Jersey Motor Vehicle Services.

Pereira, who lives in Cinnaminson, will take over MVS duties from Albert B. Ari, who has served in dual positions as acting MVS director and NJDOT deputy commissioner since June 2000. Ari will continue as deputy commissioner. Mr. Pereira will report to him.

"Al Ari has done an outstanding job balancing the positions of acting director and deputy commissioner of the NJDOT and I want to thank him for his service," Weinstein said.

"Even though he has said he is willing to continue, I'm glad to have Al back as a full-time deputy commissioner, and I believe the motorists of New Jersey will be well served by Lino Pereira as full time MVS director," Weinstein said. "Lee Pereira has the right mix of experience in supervising people and in managing organizations in both the public and private sector."

Pereira began work at MVS today. As acting director, he will be responsible for overseeing driver licensing and vehicle registration and inspection. Motor Vehicle Services, a division of the Department of Transportation, has more than 1,400 employees, as well as oversight of the state's 45 privatized motor vehicle agencies and the privately run inspection system.

After receiving a chemical engineering degree from Rutgers University in 1970, Pereira went to work in the state DEP, where he became assistant commissioner in 1984. In 1986, he went into the investment banking business. From 1988 through 1993, he was chairman of the state Advisory Council on Solid Waste Management. In 1993, he served as assistant chief of a special Economic Recovery project for the governor's office. Most recently, he has been vice president of two consulting firms, headquartered in Margate.
