Lettiere presents $150,000 to the
Township of Plainsboro for intersection improvements

(Plainsboro) - Transportation Commissioner Jack Lettiere presented a local aid check for $150,000 to the Township of Plainsboro for intersection improvements to be done on Scotts Corner Road in Plainsboro. The project includes new curbing, striping, landscaping, bus shelters, signage, design and construction management, all designed to improve safety for residents.

“One of the most important things we do at the DOT is provide property tax relief to municipalities with our Local Aid grants,” said Lettiere. “This $150,000 will pay for critical safety improvements along Scotts Corner Road, ensuring that pedestrians and mass transit users reach their destinations safely.”

Lettiere was joined by Assemblywoman Greenstein (D-Plainsboro), Assemblyman Gary Guear (D-Hamilton) and Mayor Peter Cantu.

"This investment will improve road intersections, prevent accidents and save lives," said Greenstein (D-Plainsboro). "Scotts Corner Road is one of the most heavily traveled streets in town and requires enhancements to protect pedestrians and bicyclists who utilize it."

Guear stressed the funding underscores the importance of pedestrian safety.

"Designing an adequate transportation system does not just include addressing roadway traffic," said Guear. "We also must ensure that residents can walk, bike, and use alternative forms of transportation to get from place to place in their daily lives."

The total project cost will be $300,000.

“The improvements proposed for this project are in keeping with the overall goal of the Township to make a beautiful and safe area for all of our citizens,” said Cantu.

In January 2003, a comprehensive bus stop report was prepared by the Township. The Scotts Corner Road corridor was found to have the most stops with pedestrian related access problems. Currently, Scotts Corner Road only has one pedestrian crossing that serves a Golf Course, while six bus stop locations are lacking crosswalks and bus shelters.
