McGreevey invests $2.4 million
to revitalize Main Street in Avon-by-the-Sea

(Avon) - Governor James E. McGreevey today joined state and local officials to cut the ribbon on a $2.4 million streetscape improvement project aimed at revitalizing Route 71/Main Street in the Borough of Avon-by-the-Sea.

“When we invest in New Jersey’s downtowns, everyone benefits—businesses and residents,” said McGreevey. “By investing over $2 million in Avon’s Main Street, we are not only encouraging economic growth and spurring development, but also contributing to the character of the community.”

In September 2002, Avon received a $2.4 million federal Transportation Enhancement grant to make various downtown streetscape improvements along Main Street including the installation of ornamental lighting, wooden benches, red brick sidewalks, decorative trash receptacles, and tree plantings.

The project is approximately ¾ of a mile long. It starts just north of the Route 71 Shark River Bridge and goes to the border of Bradley Beach, in the vicinity of Lake Side Avenue.

Transportation Enhancement (TE) projects are designed to foster more livable communities, preserve and protect environmental and cultural resources and to promote alternative modes of transportation. The TE funding not only demonstrates a successful partnership between federal, state and local government, but also emphasizes the vital role transportation funding plays in shaping and guiding Governor McGreevey’s smart growth initiatives.
