NJDOT announces closure of Fifth and Seventh Streets in Newark

(Trenton) – New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) Commissioner Kris Kolluri today announced the upcoming closure of Fifth and Seventh streets between Orange Street and Seventh Avenue in Newark. The closures will enable NJDOT to replace the bridges over NJ TRANSIT’s Morristown rail line over Third, Fifth, Sixth and Seventh streets and Roseville Avenue in Newark, Essex County.

Beginning Friday, February 1, NJDOT will close Fifth and Seventh streets in order to replace the five bridges. NJDOT is replacing the bridges in stages in order to minimize construction impacts upon local residents and businesses. The Fifth Street and Seventh Street structures are scheduled to reopen in November 2008, after which the remaining three structures will be closed for construction. The following detour routes will take effect February 1.

Fifth Street Detours (One-way northbound):
• From Orange Street eastbound: Left onto Roseville Avenue, right onto Seventh Avenue, left onto Fifth Street.
• From Orange Street westbound: Right onto Third Street, left onto Seventh Avenue, right onto Fifth Street.
• From I-280 westbound exit ramp: Left onto Orange Street, right onto Roseville Avenue, right onto Seventh Avenue, left onto Fifth Street.

Seventh Street Detours (One-way northbound):
• From Orange Street eastbound: Left onto Roseville Avenue, right onto Seventh Avenue, left onto Seventh Street.
• From Orange Street westbound: Right onto Third Street, left onto Seventh Avenue, right onto Seventh Street.
• From I-280 westbound exit ramp and Seventh Street northbound: Left onto Orange Street, right onto Roseville Avenue, right onto Seventh Avenue, left onto Seventh Street.

The $13.5 million state-funded project will replace the bridge decks on each of these five bridges in Newark. These bridges, which are owned by NJ TRANSIT and carry local roadways over the Morristown rail line, are structurally deficient and in need of rehabilitation. The roadway approaches of each bridge will also be upgraded as part of the project.

NJDOT also will improve traffic signals at the local intersections of Roseville Avenue and Orange Street, Roseville Avenue and Seventh Avenue, and Orange Street and Sixth Street. Construction began in October 2007 and is scheduled for completion in September 2009.
