(Trenton)- Commissioner Kris Kolluri today announced that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) will temporarily alter traffic patterns on the Route 1 and 9 Pulaski Skyway in Kearney and Jersey City, Hudson County from Friday, March 14 through Sunday, April 6. The lane and ramp closures will enable NJDOT to repair the Pulaski Skyway.
From Friday, March 14 at 11 p.m. through Sunday, March 16 at 10 p.m., NJDOT will close a single lane of the Pulaski Skyway in each direction in the vicinity of the Tonnele Circle.
From Monday, March 17 through Thursday, March 20, the Kearny ramp entrance to the Pulaski Skyway will be closed daily from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Starting Friday, March 21, the ramp will be permanently closed for three weeks. During the ramp closure, traffic will turn right onto Third Street, turn left onto Central Avenue, turn right onto Pennsylvania Avenue/Fish House Road, use the ramp for southbound Route 7 (Newark Avenue), turn left onto Route 1 and 9 Truck, continue across the Tonnele Circle, and re-enter Route 1&9. On Saturday, March 29 at 1 a.m., NJDOT will close the roadway to all westbound traffic. During the closure, traffic will exit the Pulaski Skyway at the Tonnele Avenue exit, travel across the Tonnele Circle, and use the ramp to Route 1 and 9 (Pulaski Skyway) westbound towards Newark. At 7 a.m., the westbound left lane will reopen to traffic. On Sunday morning at midnight, all westbound lanes will be closed. At 10 a.m., the westbound left lane will reopen to traffic and the right lane will remain closed. On Sunday evening at 10 p.m., NJDOT will reopen all lanes to traffic.
On April 4 at 11 p.m., NJDOT will close the left lanes of the Pulaski Skyway in both directions and reduce the width of the right lanes. On Saturday morning at 1 a.m., the Pulaski Skyway will close to westbound traffic. Traffic will detour via the Tonnele Avenue exit, travel across the circle and use the ramp to Route 1 and 9 (Pulaski Skyway) westbound towards Newark. At 7 a.m., the westbound right lane will reopen to traffic. On Sunday morning at midnight, the Pulaski Skyway will close to westound traffic. At 10 a.m., the westbound right lane will reopen to traffic and the left lane will remain closed. On Sunday evening at 10 a.m., the left lanes in both directions will reopen to traffic.
The closures are part of NJDOT’s $10 million Pulaski Skyway improvement project, which includes repairs to the existing bridge deck and partial replacement of 1,250 feet of roadway at the eastern end of the structure. Parapet repairs, concrete encasement removal and pier cap repairs to improve structural stability are also scheduled. NJDOT is scheduled to complete the project in September 2008.
NJDOT is working closely with the City of Newark, the City of Jersey City, the Township of Kearny, the New Jersey Turnpike Authority and NJ TRANSIT to coordinate the successful completion of this road improvement project.
NJDOT installed variable message signs throughout the work corridor to advise motorists of scheduled lane closures and other traffic information. Motorists can access real-time traffic information via the NJDOT website at www.njcommuter.com.
