NJDOT announces traffic changes
on Route 1 in Edison and Woodbridge

(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced upcoming traffic pattern changes on Route 1 as part of a $56.8 million project to widen Route 1 from north of Route 287 to south of the Garden State Parkway in Middlesex County.

On Monday, September 15 at 9 p.m., NJDOT will close the left lanes of Route 1 in both directions between Grandview Avenue and the Garden State Parkway. By Tuesday, September 16 at 8 a.m., Route 1 southbound will be shifted to the inside lanes as the final stage of construction commences. In addition, the Route 1 southbound ramp to Lafayette Avenue will be permanently closed and removed.

On the following Friday, September 19, NJDOT will close and reconstruct the Route 1 southbound ramp to Amboy Avenue. The ramp will close at 9 p.m. on September 19 and will reopen by 8 a.m. on Saturday, September 27. During the ramp closure, Route 1 southbound traffic will continue to the Route 287 interchange and take Route 1 northbound to Amboy Avenue.

NJDOT is widening Route 1 in order to improve safety and reduce congestion through the area. The project will provide three lanes and outside shoulders or auxiliary lanes in each direction from north of I-287 to south of the Garden State Parkway. NJDOT has widened the Amboy Avenue northbound bridge, demolished the northbound side of the bridge over the abandoned Conrail Line and built piers for the pedestrian overpass located east of Route 1. In addition, NJDOT built sidewalks and retaining walls on the northbound side of Route 1. The entire project is slated for completion in August 2009.

NJDOT has installed variable message signs on Route 1 to inform motorists of all traffic pattern changes. Real time travel and construction information is available online at www.511nj.org.

More information concerning the Route 1 Rehabilitation project in Middlesex County, is available online.
