NJDOT to improve Route 10 and Route 53 interchange
Project aims to improve safety and
operational flow in Morris Plains and Parsippany-Troy Hills
(Trenton) - Commissioner Stephen Dilts today announced that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) will improve and upgrade the Route 10 and Route 53 interchange in Morris Plains and Parsippany-Troy Hills, Morris County.
“This $7.5 million interchange improvement project will increase safety and decrease congestion throughout the convergence of busy Route 10 and Route 53 in Morris County,” said Commissioner Dilts.
The week of November 2, NJDOT will begin reconstructing and realigning the interchange. Initial construction operations will include utility relocation, drainage upgrades and the demolition of an existing property on Tabor Avenue.
During this stage of construction temporary lane closures will allowed on both Route 10 and Route 53 in order to establish the work zones. The work zones for this stage of construction will be on the right side of Route 10 westbound and on the northbound side of the Route 53 bridge over Route 10. NJDOT will maintain three lanes in each direction on Route 10 and one lane in each direction on Route 53 during normal work hours. Nighttime temporary lane closures will be allowed on both highways, as needed.
NJDOT will increase safety and reduce congestion throughout the interchange by eliminating an entrance and exit ramp on Route 10 and Route 53 in both directions, as well as installing new acceleration lanes on Route 10. Two new signalized intersections will be constructed on Route 53 at Tabor Road North and Tabor Road South/Foxwood Drive. NJDOT will also reconstruct Route 53 to provide dedicated turning lanes at the Tabor Avenue and Foxwood Drive intersections to help reduce the queuing of traffic on Route 53.
The state-funded project is anticipated for completion in May 2011.
Variable message signs will notify motorists of any upcoming traffic pattern changes. NJDOT provides emergency roadway information, construction schedule updates and real time traffic information and images at www.511nj.org.
