Route 28 in Union County to be resurfaced

(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) announced today that a maintenance resurfacing and roadway repair project will begin next week on Route 28 in Westfield Township, Garwood Borough and Cranford Township in Union County.

Asphalt sections of Route 28 will be milled and repaved in both directions over approximately 3.5 miles of the roadway between milepost 19.8 and milepost 23.3. NJDOT will also repair and upgrade the existing drainage system, curbing and sidewalks within the project areas.

Beginning Monday, September 27 through early October, NJDOT will perform drainage, curbing and sidewalk work during off-peak daytime hours, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Milling and paving is expected to start by mid-October, with work being performed during overnight hours, between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. to minimize inconvenience to motorists. Traffic will be alternated one direction at a time during this phase. No detours will be necessary.

NJDOT anticipates completing the work by the end of October.

This project is included in a $7.4 million regional maintenance contract that also will resurface sections of Routes 5, 10, 67 and 440. Route 17 in Ho-Ho Kus, Waldwick and Saddle River was already resurfaced as part of this contract.
