NJDOT to resurface Route 70 in Monmouth
and Ocean counties

(Trenton) - Commissioner James Simpson today announced that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) will resurface approximately eight miles of Route 70 in Brick and Lakewood townships in Ocean County and Wall Township and Brielle Borough, Monmouth County.

“NJDOT is committed to maintaining our transportation network in a state of good repair,” Simpson said. “Investments such as this project improve motorist safety and provide a smoother, more comfortable ride.”

NJDOT’s contractor, Tilcon Inc., is scheduled to start shoulder closures to prepare the roadway for resurfacing on Monday, February 28. Resurfacing operations will require overnight single lane closures on Route 70 in both directions between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. the following day. During the summer months, construction restrictions will be in place prohibiting any lane closures on weekends.

“Keeping all lanes of Route 70 open during busy summer weekends will ensure that this project does not negatively impact motorists or businesses during the important tourist season,” Simpson said.

The $6.9 million project will resurface an almost seven-mile stretch of Route 70 in both directions from west of Patriots Way (milepost 50.8) to just west of Herbertsville Road (milepost 57.7) through the townships of Lakewood and Brick, and will also resurface another mile of Route 70 in both directions from just west of Riverview Drive (milepost 58.7) in Brielle Borough to the eastern terminus of Route 70 in Wall Township.

NJDOT will also replace the Route 70 bridge decks over the South Branch of the Metedeconk River, located within the project limits in Brick. The bridge repair work is expected to start in mid-March and will require traffic shifts on Route 70. Upgraded signage, roadway striping and guide rail will also be provided. The project is scheduled to be fully completed this fall. All work is weather dependent.

The project was designed in-house by NJDOT engineers.

Variable message signs will be used to inform motorists of traffic pattern changes during construction. Motorists are also encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
