Local road closures announced in Rutherford
Improvements part of Route 3 Passaic River Crossing Bridge replacement project

(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced a series of upcoming local roadway closures in conjunction with the ongoing $149 million, federally-funded Route 3 Passaic River bridge replacement project to improve safety and reduce congestion along a heavily traveled corridor.

On Wednesday, May 11 and Thursday, May 12, Rutherford Avenue westbound, between Ridge Road and Park Avenue, will be closed to traffic between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to install electrical conduit. One travel lane will be maintained on Rutherford Avenue eastbound.

• During the closures, motorists on Rutherford Avenue westbound will be detoured to Ridge Road north to Marginal Road west to Park Avenue southbound back to Rutherford Avenue.

Beginning Friday, May 13, NJDOT’s contractor, J.P. Creamer-Sanzari JV, is scheduled to close and detour Service Road (also known as Thomas E. Dunn Memorial Highway) eastbound, east of Orient Way, for approximately two weeks to construct a noise wall adjacent to Route 3 westbound in Rutherford. One travel lane will be maintained on Service Road westbound. Service Road runs parallel to Route 3 north of the highway in Rutherford.

• During the closures, motorists on Service Road eastbound will be detoured to Rutherford Avenue. Rutherford Avenue runs parallel to Route 3 just south of the highway in Lyndhurst.

All work has been coordinated with NJ TRANSIT.

NJDOT is replacing the structurally deficient moveable bridge with a new fixed span over the Passaic River, connecting Clifton City in Passaic County with Rutherford and Lyndhurst in Bergen County.

NJDOT has staged the project in a manner that will enable motorists to cross the Passaic River throughout construction. Three lanes of Route 3 will remain open to traffic in both directions during daytime and peak period hours. No detours are scheduled for mainline Route 3. Nighttime single and double lane closures will be permitted, except during events held at the nearby Meadowlands complex.

State and Local Police are being used for work-zone safety during construction. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org real-time travel information.
