New bridge handles three lanes of Route 1 southbound in North Brunswick

(Trenton) - Two weeks after fully returning Route 1 northbound onto the newly reconstructed bridge over an abandoned rail line and two local access roadways in North Brunswick, NJDOT returned the third lane of Route 1 southbound onto the bridge over the weekend.

Over the weekend NJDOT’s contractor, J. Fletcher Creamer and Sons, shifted the right-most lane of Route 1 southbound traffic back onto the reconstructed southbound side of the new bridge. To accommodate further work on the inside portion of Route 1 southbound, the left-lane and shoulder has been closed with all three travel lanes shifted to the right, utilizing the shoulder. This traffic pattern is expected to remain in place for approximately six weeks, at which time Route 1 will be placed in the final travel configuration in both directions.

Route 1 normally carries three travel lanes in each direction over the bridge. To accommodate reconstruction efforts, the right-most lane in each direction had been diverted onto College Farm Road East and College Farm Road West adjacent to the bridge since July 2009, with two lanes of Route 1 maintained in each direction on the structure.

The $24.1 million project is replacing the structurally deficient Route 1 bridge with a wider structure over an abandoned Conrail line and two local access roadways in North Brunswick. The two connector roads beneath the structure have been converted to a single roadway. NJDOT is also repaving and making safety improvements on Route 1 between Milltown Road and Ryders Lane in North Brunswick.

Construction is scheduled for completion later this summer 2011.

NJDOT has installed variable message signs on Route 1 to inform motorists of all traffic pattern changes. Real time travel and construction information is available at www.511nj.org
