Harrison Street intersection with Route 1 to be improved in West Windsor
New right-turn lane onto Route 1 will reduce backups
(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced that construction will begin next week on a project to widen and improve the Harrison Street intersection with Route 1 in West Windsor.
“This is a cost-effective solution that will reduce congestion on the local roadway system and provide better traffic flow at this important intersection,” Commissioner James Simpson said.
NJDOT’s contractor, Earle Asphalt Company, is scheduled to begin overnight single-lane closures with alternating traffic patterns on Harrison Street on Monday, July 25. These overnight lane closures will only be needed periodically. Most of the work will take place offline and will not impact motorists on Harrison Street.
The $797,000 project aims to improve safety and reduce congestion at the intersection by widening Harrison Street eastbound to include a dedicated left-turn-only lane and a new multi-use right lane. Harrison Street currently features only one travel lane at the intersection, which leads to traffic backups for motorists headed to Route 1 during peak travel periods. The additional lane will provide increased access to Route 1 southbound, while freeing up the current lane for motorists turning left onto Route 1 northbound.
NJDOT expects the improved intersection will better accommodate the higher traffic volumes that are anticipated when the new University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro opens nearby in 2012.
Additional improvements include paving and striping work, traffic signal modifications, utility relocations and upgrades to the existing curb at the intersection. Route 1 will not be affected during daytime and peak traffic hours. The project is expected to be completed this winter.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
