Route 183 bridge over NJ TRANSIT to be closed
for reconstruction in Netcong
NJDOT replacing bridge and reconstructing Netcong Circle

(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced that a long-term closure of the Route 183 Bridge that runs over NJ TRANSIT Morristown Line railroad tracks in Netcong Borough, Morris County will be implemented on Friday night, October 21.

The structurally deficient Route 183 bridge, which was originally built in 1900, will be demolished and replaced with a new, wider structure with an increased vertical under clearance. The new bridge will feature sidewalks along both directions of Route 183 and has been designed to appear similar to the architectural style of the original structure.

The bridge, located to the north of the Netcong Circle, is anticipated to remain closed to traffic for approximately nine months. Route 183 will remain open to traffic, in both directions, through and to the south of the Netcong Circle.

• Route 183 southbound motorists will be detoured before the bridge to Route 206 southbound to I-80 eastbound to Interchange 27 for Route 183 and Route 206 southbound.

• Route 183 northbound motorists will be directed to I-80 westbound to Interchange 25 for Route 206 northbound to Route 183.

NJDOT’s contractor, New Prince Construction, began preliminary construction set up and utility relocation work in mid-August.

In addition to replacing the Route 183 bridge over the railroad tracks, the $12.9 million federally-funded project will eliminate the 80-year old Netcong Circle, where routes 46 and 183 converge. The two highways will be realigned to replace the outdated traffic configuration with a new signalized intersection. The existing bridge that carries Route 46 westbound traffic over Route 183 southbound will be eliminated. While single-lane closures will be allowed during nighttime and off-peak hours, one travel-lane on Route 46 will be maintained in each direction throughout construction.

Variable message signs will notify motorists of the roadway closure. The project is expected to be complete by the end of 2013.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. NJDOT provides emergency roadway information, construction schedule updates and real time traffic information and images at www.511nj.org
