Greenwood Avenue bridge opens
in Hopewell Borough

(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced the newly reconstructed Greenwood Avenue bridge over the Trenton Branch of CSX railroad has been opened to traffic in Hopewell Borough, Mercer County.

NJDOT has completed the full replacement of the bridge deck and superstructure. All new lighting has been installed and fully activated on the bridge as well.

NJDOT in-house engineers designed the $3.2 million project, which also replaced the Van Dyke Road bridge deck over the railroad line in Hopewell Township. The Department’s contractor, Earle Asphalt Company, also has repaved the approach roadways and installed new curbs at each location.

Van Dyke Road bridge was fully closed to traffic in February 2010 for reconstruction and reopened to traffic in October 2010. NJDOT subsequently closed the Greenwood Avenue structure at that time with the anticipation of reopening the bridge to traffic by the end of 2011.

The Greenwood Avenue bridge was reconstructed in two stages in order to keep the bridge open to pedestrians at all times.

Both bridges, located in a historical section of Mercer County near the Hopewell train station, had been rated as structurally deficient and in need of extensive repair. Construction began in fall 2009 and was closely coordinated with CSX freight railroad schedules.
