Route 206 traffic shifted across bridge over Black River in Chester
Final stage of construction to begin on bridge deck replacement

(Trenton) - To set up the final stage on the bridge reconstruction project, NJDOT officials announced Route 206 traffic will be shifted over the Black River tonight in Chester Township, Morris County.

NJDOT’s contractor, Konkus Corporation, is scheduled to shift both Route 206 travel lanes onto the southbound side of the bridge, utilizing the existing southbound shoulder, to establish the new work zone on the northbound of the bridge. Once the construction zone is in place - by Saturday morning, November 5 - one lane will be maintained on Route 206 in each direction.

The shift had originally been planned for the weekend of October 21 but was rescheduled to this weekend due to weather and other factors.

The $1.3 million federally-funded project is replacing the existing, structurally deficient Route 206 bridge superstructure, repair the bridge abutments and resurface the bridge approaches. The existing bridge was built in 1928.

The superstructure replacement work is being accomplished in stages allowing Route 206 to remain open to traffic in both directions during the majority of construction. The use of pre-cast concrete bridge components enables NJDOT to significantly shorten the construction schedule and minimize impacts to traffic.

Heavy and wide-load trucks are restricted from using the bridge during construction. Signs are posted on I-80 eastbound and on Route 206 northbound near I-287 alerting truck drivers to this restriction. All marine access is restricted along the Black River between the boat launch from Pleasant Hill Road and Route 206. Signs are posted on Pleasant Hill Road and Hillside Road alerting recreational canoeists and kayakers of this restriction.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org real-time travel information.
