Interstate 195 eastbound shift over New Jersey Turnpike this weekend in Robbinsville

(Trenton) - NJ state transportation officials today announced that the Interstate 195 eastbound travel lanes will be shifted on to the new westbound bridge over the New Jersey Turnpike in Robbinsville, Mercer County this weekend.

On Friday night, December 7, New Jersey Turnpike Authority (NJTA) contractor, PKF-Mark III, is scheduled to implement the eastbound crossover and place all Interstate 195 traffic (two lanes in each direction) onto the westbound bridge.

The new westbound bridge was opened in mid-November. Prior to that the existing I-195 eastbound bridge had been supporting all four travel lanes since July 2011, as the old westbound bridge was demolished and a new, longer structure was built.

The new I-195 westbound bridge has been reconfigured to carry two travel lanes in each direction over the Turnpike, separated by concrete barrier, but all roadway shoulders will be eliminated. Eastbound motorists will be shifted back over the median to return to the eastbound side of the highway once they are past the bridge.

Work will now begin to reconstruct and lengthen the eastbound bridge at this location. NJTA is lengthening the I-195 bridges over the Turnpike in connection with the widening of the Turnpike from three lanes in each direction to six lanes at this location. Construction began in 2009 and the entire project is expected to be complete in late 2014.

The implementation of the new traffic pattern is weather dependent.

Variable message signs on I-195 are in place to notify motorists of upcoming construction and traffic pattern changes. NJDOT and NJTA provide emergency roadway information, construction schedule updates and real time traffic information and images at www.511nj.org
