New Route 183 bridge over NJ TRANSIT to be opened to traffic this weekend
NJDOT has completely replaced structurally-deficient bridge as part of Netcong Circle elimination project

(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced that the new Route 183 bridge that runs over NJ TRANSIT Morristown Line railroad tracks in Netcong Borough, Morris County is scheduled to be opened to traffic this Saturday, March 9.

The bridge was fully closed to vehicular traffic in October 2011 to allow for the complete replacement of the structure.

The old structurally deficient Route 183 bridge, which was originally built in 1900, has been demolished and replaced with a new, wider structure with an increased vertical under clearance. The new bridge features sidewalks along both directions of Route 183 and has been designed to appear similar to the architectural style of the original structure.

In addition to replacing the Route 183 bridge over the railroad tracks, NJDOT’s contractor, New Prince Construction, is continuing to advance the $12.9 million federally-funded project which has also eliminated the 80-year old Netcong Circle, where routes 46 and 183 converge.

In January 2013, the contractor opened the new temporary intersection, effectively eliminating the old circle configuration. In its wake stands a new signalized “T” intersection. This is not the complete, final configuration for the redesigned intersection - temporary traffic signals and striping are in place - but the final shape has started to take place. Currently the contractor is advancing drainage upgrades, utility relocations and completing the installation of the new permanent traffic signals at the new intersection.

While single-lane closures are allowed during nighttime and off-peak hours, one travel-lane on Route 46 is being maintained in each direction throughout construction. The project remains on schedule to be complete by the end of 2013.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. NJDOT provides emergency roadway information, construction schedule updates and real time traffic information and images at www.511nj.org
