NJDOT to begin bridge maintenance project
along Interstate 78
Twelve individual bridge structures to receive preventive repairs
in Hunterdon and Somerset counties

To help extend the service life of the bridges NJDOT will be performing different levels of bridge maintenance work at each location including deck patching, joint repairs, header reconstruction, crack repairs and the application of a corrosion inhibitor. Work will be performed on abutment walls and piers at certain locations as well.

NJDOT’s maintenance contractor, Power Concrete Co., is scheduled to begin repair work at the Jutland Road bridge over I-78 and Route 22 in Union Township this week, with operations progressing eastward. Temporary single lane closures will be allowed during overnight at each location and off-peak hours and shoulder closures will be allowed at any time. All lanes will be maintained on Interstate 78 during daytime hours. The over $1 million project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2013.

The Department recently completed similar bridge preventive maintenance projects to address bridges along Route 18 in Monmouth and Middlesex counties, along Interstate 195 in Mercer and Monmouth counties and is finishing work on a contract repairing bridges all over Monmouth County.

Performing these types of proactive, preventive repairs helps prolong the lifespan of these bridges and delays the need for more extensive and more expensive projects.
