Major Interstate 287 traffic shift planned for this weekend in Morris County
NJDOT advancing bridge deck replacement over Eden Lane in Hanover as part of ongoing $27 million pavement improvement job

(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced a major traffic pattern change is planned for this weekend on Interstate 287 as construction continues to advance on an ongoing roadway rehabilitation project in Morris County.

To set up a safe and efficient new construction zone on the I-287 northbound bridge over Eden Lane in Hanover Township, NJDOT’s contractor, Tilcon, is scheduled to implement the following traffic pattern changes for about a one-mile stretch between the Route 24 interchange and the Route 10 interchange on Friday night, June 21;

• All I-287 northbound travel lanes will be shifted to the left, onto the existing median - which has been temporarily paved over to handle live traffic - and a portion of the southbound side of the highway.
• To accommodate this shift, all I-287 southbound travel lanes will be shifted to the right, utilizing the outside shoulder as a travel lane.
• The new work zone will be marked off using construction barriers/barrels.

Once the new traffic pattern is fully in place by Saturday morning, four travel lanes will be maintained in each direction on I-287 during peak period hours. NJDOT will be replacing the Eden Lane bridge decks in four stages, which will require a series of similar traffic pattern changes in both directions over the coming months.

The $27.4 million project - which began initial construction activity in September 2012 - is designed to improve the pavement condition on a seven-mile segment of Interstate 287 in both directions from just south of the South Street underpass in Morristown (milepost 35.4) to the Littleton Road overpass in Parsippany (milepost 42.2). The replacement of the bridge decks over Eden Lane in Hanover (milepost 38.8) is also included in the project as are guide rail upgrades, drainage clearing and various other incidental improvements to the highway.

NJDOT has designed the project to advance in stages to minimize impacts to motorists. All I-287 mainline travel lanes will remain open in each direction during peak-period hours throughout construction, while single and double-lane closures will be allowed during overnight and off-peak hours. The project is expected to be completed in fall 2014.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check www.511nj.org for real-time travel information.
