Series of full closures announced for Routes 9 and 166
in Toms River
Garden State Parkway bridges being demolished
over state highways at Exit 83

(Trenton) - A series of overnight full roadway closures are planned on Routes 9 and 166 in each direction under the Garden State Parkway (GSP) in Toms River over the next three weeks, NJDOT and Turnpike Authority (NJTA) officials today announced.

On Monday, September 9, NJTA’s contractor, George Harms Construction Company, is scheduled to begin a series of full overnight closures of Route 9 northbound and Route 166 southbound for concrete demolition of the existing GSP bridge decks running over the state highways at his location.

• Route 9 southbound motorists destined for Route 166 will be directed to use Indian Head Road to Connector Road to Route 166.
o Route 9 southbound access to the ramp for the GSP will be maintained.

• Route 166 northbound motorists destined for Route 9 northbound will be directed to use Connector Road to Indian Head Road to Route 9 northbound.

• NJTA will be utilizing variable message signs to help motorists navigate the detours and Toms River police will assist in traffic management.

The NJTA is reconstructing the bridges over Routes 9 and 166 as part of a $350 million project to restore full-width shoulders and make other important safety improvements between milepost 83 in Toms River, Ocean County, and milepost 100 in Wall Township, Monmouth County. Construction began in February and is expected to be completed by the end of 2014.

Route 9 merges with the Garden State Parkway for approximately 3.5 miles in Toms River, between Exits 80 and 83. The bridges being worked on here are located at Exit 83. Route 166 northbound turns into Route 9 northbound directly south of this location, while Route 9 southbound becomes Route 166 southbound directly north of it. http://www.state.nj.us/transportation/refdata/sldiag/State%20Routes.pdf

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
