Route 21 southbound viaduct traffic shift in Newark
McCarter Highway rehabilitation project advances

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced Route 21 McCarter Highway southbound will be shifted to the right to allow for bridge repairs to continue on the Route 21 viaduct in Newark, Essex County.

Beginning tonight at 10 p.m., Friday, July 22, until 5 a.m. Saturday, July 23, NJDOT’s contractor, De Foe Corporation, will shift center lane traffic on the Route 21 southbound viaduct onto the reconstructed right lane, utilizing concrete barriers in order to advance work on the bridge rehabilitation project. The new traffic pattern is an extension of what has been in effect since April 8 at the Chester Avenue Bridge, and is expected to remain until late summer 2016. Concrete barriers will divide Route 21 southbound into two single-lane 10-foot cattle chutes on both sides of an extended center work zone. Route 21 northbound will remain unaffected.

NJDOT has designed work on the $30.7 million federally-funded viaduct rehabilitation project to be performed in stages. The project is expected to be completed by the end of summer 2017.

Portable variable message signs are being utilized to provide advance notification to the public of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
