Route 1 northbound shoulder to be closed this afternoon for emergency repairs in South Brunswick

Traffic using shoulder during evening commute will be shifted back to mainline earlier than usual

(Trenton) -New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the temporary immediate closure of the right shoulder on Route 1 northbound before Raymond Road in South Brunswick for emergency repairs. This portion of the shoulder is used as an extra lane during the morning and evening commute.

Beginning immediately this afternoon, Tuesday, August 28, NJDOT’s contractor, Mount Construction, will close the right shoulder on Route 1 northbound before Raymond Road in South Brunswick to make emergency repairs to a collapsed catch basin that resulted in a sinkhole. The shoulder will remain closed until the repairs are complete.

Motorists using the shoulder as a travel lane, which normally ends at Raymond Road, will be shifted back onto the normal travel lanes ahead of the usual merge.

Motorists are advised to use caution, slow down, and expect possible congestion at the merge.

Variable Message Signs will provide advance notification to motorists of traffic pattern changes associated with the work. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
