Route 1 southbound to be closed and detoured in Lawrence

Lane closures on Route 1 northbound also necessary for bridge deck replacement

(Trenton) -New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced that Route 1 southbound will be closed and detoured overnight on Sunday as the Route 1 over Route 1 Business bridge deck replacement project in Lawrence, Mercer County progresses.

Beginning at 8 p.m., Sunday, February 24, until 6 a.m. the next day, NJDOT's contractor, Berto Construction, is scheduled to close and detour Route 1 southbound to install a temporary construction barrier and create a work zone on the outer edge of the structure traveling northbound. The contractor also will close the left lane on Route 1 northbound. One lane on Route 1 northbound will be maintained.

Beginning 6 a.m. Monday, February 25 and lasting until late spring, the right lane will be closed on Route 1 northbound with traffic shifted to the outside edge of the roadway traveling southbound. Northbound traffic will be shifted in the middle of roadway. Two lanes will be maintained in both directions over the bridge.

The following detour will be in place Sunday night:

Route 1 Bridge over Route 1 Business Southbound Detour

  • Motorists on Route 1 southbound should keep right to enter Route 1 Business southbound
  • Continue on Route 1 Business southbound to traffic circle
  • Take the second exit out of the traffic circle to Whitehead Road southbound
  • Keep right to enter Route 1 southbound

The $2.9 million dollar federally-funded project will replace the bridge deck, parapets, and concrete median barrier on the bridge. The project is designed in stages to minimize impacts to traffic and will maintain two lanes of traffic in each direction during peak travel times. During off-peak travel times, one lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction. The project is expected to be completed this summer.

Variable messaging signs are being utilized to provide advance notification to the motoring public of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work. NJDOT will provide more information before any lane closures are scheduled.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news and updates follow us on the NJDOT Facebook page or on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
