overnight closures to begin Wednesday night for two weeks

Nightly detour necessary as painting project advances

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced that the Route 88 Bridge over the Point Pleasant Canal in Point Pleasant that was scheduled to be closed and detoured overnight Monday through Friday for two weeks starting on tonight, Monday, April 8 has been rescheduled to begin on Wednesday, April 10, as the painting project advances. The delay was necessary to accommodate a county paving project in the area.

Beginning at 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 10 until 6 a.m. the next day, and continuing Monday through Friday nights for two weeks, NJDOT’s contractor IEW Corp., will close and detour the bridge to repaint the towers and counterweights. The full closure is necessary to lift the bridge to paint components that are not accessible while the bridge is in the down position. The following detour will be in place overnight Monday through Friday, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the next day:

Route 88 Eastbound detour
(April 10 – 19, Monday – Friday, 8 p.m. – 6 a.m.)

  • Route 88 eastbound motorists will be directed to turn right on Beaver Dam Road/CR 630
  • Turn left on Bridge Avenue east and go over the Lovelandtown Bridge
  • Turn left on Bay Avenue/CR 604 to Route 88

Route 88 Westbound detour
(April 10 – 19, Monday – Friday, 8 p.m. – 6 a.m.)

  • Route 88 westbound motorists will be directed to turn left on Bay Avenue/CR 604
  • Turn right on Bridge Avenue west over the Lovelandtown Bridge
  • Turn right on Beaver Dam Road/CR 630 to Route 88 westbound

Between Monday, April 22 through Friday, April 26, there will be overnight lane closures between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. the next day. At least one lane will be maintained in each direction while the work is taking place. Between Monday, April 29 through Friday, May 10, the bridge is expected to be closed overnight from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the next day, Monday through Friday.
