Route 139 Lower Level eastbound and westbound to be closed weeknights as project nears completion

Traffic will be diverted to Route 139 Upper Level

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced Route 139 Lower Level eastbound and westbound will be closed and detoured weeknights for the next several weeks as the Pulaski Skyway Contract 2 Rehabilitation of Route 139 nears completion.

Beginning at 11 p.m. tonight, Monday May 20 until 5 a.m. the next day and continuing Monday through Thursday nights, and Friday nights (Saturday morning) from 1 a.m. to 7 a.m., NJDOT’s contractor, Schiavone Construction, is scheduled to close Route 139 Lower Level eastbound and westbound to complete the underdeck lighting, painting, final paving, and median construction. This final stage of work is expected to be completed in late June or early July. Route 139 Lower Level traffic in both directions will be diverted to the Upper Level. Route 139 Lower Level eastbound will be closed and detoured at Tonnele Circle with the following detours:

Route 139 eastbound detour:

  • Traffic in Tonnele Circle will be directed south on Tonnele Avenue
  • Turn left onto St. Paul’s Avenue
  • Turn left on JFK Boulevard
  • Turn right onto Route 139 Upper Level

Route 139 westbound traffic heading toward the Pulaski Skyway:

  • Route 139 Lower Level westbound will be diverted to the Upper Level
  • Turn left onto Kennedy Boulevard
  • Turn right onto the ramp leading to Tonnele Circle
  • Use the left lane to enter the circle and go straight to ramp onto Pulaski Skyway and Route 1&9 South/Newark

Route 139 westbound traffic heading toward the Route 1&9 Truck or Route 7 west:

  • Route 139 Lower Level westbound will be diverted to the Upper Level
  • Turn left onto Kennedy Boulevard
  • Turn right onto the ramp leading to Tonnele Circle
  • Turn right onto Route 1&9 northbound
  • Take the County Road jughandle, cross Route 1&9 and then turn immediate left onto County Road Ramp
  • Turn left onto Manhattan Avenue eastbound
  • At the signal, turn right onto Route 1&9 southbound to the ramp for Route 1&9 Truck and Route 7

Motorist are advised to take the NJ Turnpike-Hudson County Extension tonight to avoid this construction.   Motorists traveling westbound from the Holland Tunnel should stay to the far right following signs to I-78 Westbound and the NJ Turnpike to all destinations west and south. 

Motorists going to the Holland Tunnel from points west and south should utilize NJ Turnpike-Hudson County Extension /Interstate 78 Eastbound at NJ Turnpike Exit 14.

This work is part of the $104 million Pulaski Contract 2, which will repair and improve the upper and lower levels of Route 139. Route 139 links the eastern end of the Pulaski Skyway to the Jersey City waterfront. During this contract, the deck on Route 139 Upper Level eastbound was replaced, along with five cross street bridges from Palisade Avenue to Kennedy Boulevard. Contract 2, which is nearing completion, is part of the $1 billion Pulaski Skyway rehabilitation project, which is being advanced through 10 separate construction contracts into the year 2024. The massive improvement project will extend the life of the Skyway by 75 years.

Community Outreach
NJDOT created a project-specific website - www.pulaskiskyway.com - which contains a wealth of information about the Skyway and the project, and will be updated with relevant new information as work progresses. The Department is carefully coordinating the Pulaski Skyway project with other regional transportation infrastructure projects to minimize traffic congestion.

NJDOT will be using Variable Message Signs to provide advance notification to motorists of traffic pattern changes associated with the work. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
