Application Process

The New Jersey Department of Transportation's Office of Maritime Resources (NJDOT/OMR) administers the National Boating Infrastructure Grant (NBIG) program. Marinas are encouraged to review the grant guidelines and criteria for NBIG. All project costs are pro-rated to serve a transient boating population, and there is a 25 percent match associated with receipt of the NBIG funds. The project budget must be clear, reasonable and cost-efficient. Applicants may apply for Tier 1, Tier 2, or both, so long as the projects are not one and the same. Interested parties must review the final Federal Register announcement regarding the particulars of the program.

The NJDOT/OMR is currently accepting Letters of Interest (LOI) for FY 2014 funding. A LOI is the first step in the NBIG application process. A package of information, "What you need to know to apply for NBIG funding" (pdf 404kb) is available for interested applicants.

Ingenuity within prescribed guidelines and creative design is encouraged. All content should be project specific. Please contact us for additional information, or to let us know if these links are helpful, and what can be added or adjusted to ensure the most appropriate and useful information.

Also, the National Boating Infrastructure Grant program’s sponsoring agency, the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), has a template (pdf, 124kb) for developing a "BIG" grant proposal. This document is designed to provide additional guidance on completing the standard grant narrative for all proposals. Tier II applicants, note the section on addressing the criteria for Tier II proposals that determines the point values used by USFWS in the ranking and scoring process.
