Funding
Funding is periodically made available
for infrastructure projects. Infrastructure
projects include the planning,
design and construction or installation
of sidewalks, crosswalks, signals,
traffic-calming and bicycle facilities.
Here are some important points
about the grant application process:
- Projects must be located
within two miles of any
school that serves students
in grades K-8.
- Funds from the Safe Routes
to School (SRTS) Program
are provided on a reimbursement
basis only. Before applying,
applicants should access
their capability to comply
with state and federal
requirements. More information
is availabe in Local Aid's SRTS
Grant Application Handbook.
- Nonprofits that are interested
in applying to SRTS funding
under this grant should
contact Local Aid at 609.530.3640.
Non-infrastructure projects include
activities such as public
awareness campaigns, walk
and bike to school events
and training, traffic education
and enforcement and student
lessons on bicycle and pedestrian
safety, health and the environment.
The New Jersey Department
of Transportation (NJDOT)
has partnered with the New
Jersey Transportation Management
Associations (TMAs) to administer
a new statewide education
and encouragement program
using Safe Routes to School
Federal Safe, Accountable,
Flexible, Efficient Transportation
Equity Act: A Legacy for Users
(SAFETEA-LU) funds. The goal is
to educate and encourage more children
to walk and bicycle to school.
