Trains, Buses and Ferries

Bicyclists need to know how they can be accommodated on buses, trains and ferries in New Jersey.

Currently, half of NJ TRANSIT buses are equipped with pull down bike-carrying racks or allotted space in the undercarriage. To learn how to use a bike-carrying rack, watch the video below.

Buses

NJ TRANSIT Bus

Bicycles are permitted in under carriage storage area of long haul commuter buses. In South Jersey (Trenton, Princeton, Atlantic City and south) bicycle racks are provided on the front of commuter buses. Each rack accomodates two bicycles. No peak hour restrictions. No permit required.

Private Bus Lines

Check with individual private bus lines for their bicycle carriage regulations.

Trains

NJ TRANSIT - Atlantic City Rail Line, Main/Bergen Line, Morris & Essex Line, Northeast Corridor Line, North Jersey Coast Line, Raritan Valley Line

Up to two standard frame bicycles, per assessible rail car are accepted during off-peak hours and all day Saturday and Sunday. Collapsible bicycles are accomodated at all times. Peak travel period regulations and other information can be on NJ TRANSIT's Web site.

Boonton Line, Pascack Line

Full size bicycles are not permitted, since there is no off-peak service on these lines. Collapsible bicycles are allowed at all times, on all lines.

PATH (Port Authority Trans-Hudson)

Full size bicycles are permitted during off-peak hours. Collapsible bicycles are allowed at all times. Information is available by calling (201) 216-2677.

AMTRAK

Collapsible bicycles are permitted in passenger cars at all times. Non-collapsible bicycles must be boxed and stored in baggage cars, and therefore can only be accepted at stations where baggage service is available. For more information check with AMTRAK, (800) USA-RAIL.

River LINE Light Rail

The River Line light rail system offering service between Trenton and Camden allows bicycles on board. Bikes must be secured to racks in the cars (maximum of six bikes per car),

Hudson-Bergen Light Rail and Newark City Subway

Bicycles may be carried aboard the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail and Newark City Subway during off-peak hours only (weekdays from 9:30 am to 4 pm and 7 pm to 6 am and on Hudson-Bergen Light Rail cars all day Saturday, Sunday and state holidays).

PATCO-Lindenwold Line

Bicycles are allowed at all times.

Passenger Ferry

NJ/NY Ferry Service
