I-280 eastbound bridge over railroad

Roseland, Essex County

I-280 eastbound bridge opens in Roseland
NJDOT replaces bridge in three weeks

The I-280 bridge eastbound over the Morristown-Erie Railroad opened on May 19, 2006. The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) replaced the bridge in three weeks, using Hyperbuild techniques. The $4 million federally funded safety project is located between mileposts 3.37 and 4.71.

Using traditional, cast-in-place installation would have taken up to nine months to accomplish. Instead, by employing Hyperbuild techniques, NJDOT condensed the time to replace the deck and beams to three weeks. Contractor Union Paving and Construction fabricated the deck panels off-site and transported them to the bridge to install.

NJDOT identified the bridge’s structural deficiencies during a routine, biannual inspection in May 2005. Within one week it did emergency repairs to ensure safety and began to design its replacement. NJDOT solicited bids to replace the bridge in early August and awarded the contract in October 2005.

During construction, all eastbound lanes were closed and traffic shifted to the westbound lanes. Temporary shifts and closures were strategically implemented to expedite the project and minimize inconveniences to area motorists.

Hyperbuild
The Hyperbuild strategy condenses the scoping, design and construction phases of a project by using innovative construction and design concepts, methods and materials.

NJDOT also successfully used the Hyperbuild strategy to replace bridge decks in Trenton on Route 1 at Olden Avenue and in Ridgefield Park on the Route 46 Overpeck Creek Bridge.
