Q.

Why is this work being done?
A. The existing bridge deck is seriously deteriorated and in need of a complete reconstruction. In addition, the existing structural steel paint, timber fender system, piers and bearing require upgrades/improvements.

Who is doing the work?
A. The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) awarded a contract for this project in March 2006 to IEW Construction Group Inc., of Trenton. Felix Fuster is the NJDOT Resident Engineer who will supervise the work.
   

Q.

How much will it cost?
A. It is estimated that the total cost of rehabilitation and reconstruction of the bridge will be $33 million. The total includes costs for construction engineering and construction. This will be funded by the Federal Highway Administration.

How long will it take to complete?
A. Designated as a Hyperbuild project, it is scheduled to be completed by April 2009, minimizing the number of days traffic is impacted.

Is the community involved?
A. NJDOT held various public information centers and a pre-construction meeting and has been working with Newark, East Newark and Harrison officials and residents since January of 2005.

How have the impacts of construction on travelers and the community been addressed?

  • Reconstruct bridge deck while maintaining two lanes in each direction throughout corridor.

  • Contractor disincentives are included in the contract to avoid delay to the project completion.
