Route 29 Waterfront Improvements

The Route 29 improvements were designed to alleviate traffic congestion in Trenton. However, the project contains elements that will enhance the local neighborhoods and encourage recreational activity along the banks of the Delaware River.

On March 2, 2002 motorists coming into the city on Route 29 from the interstate highways to the north and the south were able to use the new tunnel and save precious minutes of traveling time.

These improvements address the needs of local residents, commuters and area businesses. The tunnel was designed to reduce the traffic impact on the neighborhoods in the South Trenton area as well as alleviate traffic congestion coming into the city. The tunnel and other recreational projects will enhance the area's economic future with the rejuvenation of its waterfront.

The Route 29 improvements led by NJDOT are complemented by the projects underway by Mercer County and Trenton.

Context Sensitive Design is an approach to planning and designing transportation projects based on active and early partnerships with communities. NJDOT formally incorporated it into its procedures in 1999.

A Community Partnering Team was established. Goals were identified and sub-committees formed to address:

  • Steering
  • Landscape and design
  • Project coordination - Natural resources
  • Bikepath - Pedestrian - Multimodal
  • Safety - Security - Maintenance
  • Funding
  • Local issues
  • Parking

Local residents have been meeting with NJDOT since 1996 on these improvements. The Community Partnering Team continues to work with NJDOT, Mercer County and the City of Trenton on the following projects:

The schedule for the projects listed above can be reviewed here.
