route 35 victory bridge graphic

Overview

The construction on this project has been completed.

NJDOT has built a new bridge that replaced the existing Route 35 Victory Bridge over the Raritan River to connect Perth Amboy and Sayreville. Work began in December 2002 and was substantially completed in December 2005.

This long awaited “Fix It First” project is expected to relieve congestion in this region. It will replace the aging swing bridge with its four narrow travel lanes and no shoulders with a fixed-structure high enough to accommodate marine traffic. The new bridge consists of twin structures (northbound and southbound) each carrying two 12-foot travel lanes, a 10-foot bike lane/outside shoulder and a three-foot shoulder. The southbound bridge also has a six-foot wide sidewalk.

When the southbound bridge was completed in Summer 2004, Route 35 traffic (both northbound and southbound) was diverted from the old Victory Bridge to the new bridge. After the northbound bridge was completed in September 2005, the northbound lanes were reconfigured in the final reconfiguration.

George Harms Construction Company of Howell was the contractor for this $109 million project that was funded by federal and New Jersey Transportation Trust Fund monies.

The Route 9/Route 35 Victory Circle was also being replaced at this time.
