Final Design and Construction

The purpose of the Final Design phase is to produce the project's construction contract documents for use in soliciting bids from prospective contractors and moving the project to the Construction Phase. Final Design includes the following major elements:

  • Continued advancement and completion of engineering design tasks initiated during the Preliminary Design Phase;
  • Project Contract Documents (Plans, Specifications, Construction Schedule and Construction Cost Estimate) to obtain bids from prospective contractors;
  • Environmental reevaluations, permits and clearances;
  • Executed utility relocation agreements;
  • Right of Way acquisition;
  • Access Design Agreements executed with property owners whose driveways are affected by the project;
  • Executed Jurisdictional Agreements with Stafford Township, Borough of Ship Bottom and Ocean County;
  • Continued community outreach.
  • Final Design Phase has been completed for all Contracts.
Project schedule

Construction began on the first contract on May 3, 2013. The following schedule is planned at this time. Both funding and the types of proposed improvements will influence the later design and construction schedule.

Construction
Bids were received on March 7, 2013 for the New Manahawkin Bay Bridge Contract. Thhis contract was awarded on April 24, 2013 and construction activities began on May 3, 2013. This contract included building a new high level structure parallel to the existing Manahawkin Bay Bridge, along with various associated improvements to the bridge approaches and surrounding area. The new bridge was opened to traffic in April 2016.

Bids were received on November 6, 2014 for the Environmental Mitigation Contract. This contract was awarded on December 15, 2014 and construction activities began in February 2015.This contract is complete.

Bids were received on November 13, 2014 for the Rehabilitation of Existing Trestle Bridges Contract. This contract was awarded on December 23, 2014 and construction activities began in February 2015. This contract is complete.

Bids were received on October 6,2016 for the Rehabilitaton of the Existing Manahawkin Bay Bridge Contract. This contract is substantially complete.

Contract 1 was awarded in November 2020 and Construction is anticipated to begin in February 2021 and will be completed in December 2024.
