Workers erect the galvanized reinforcement steel cage prior to pouring concrete for the pier columns on top of the pier footing which is inside the steel sheet pile cofferdam. The steel rebar cage conforms to the shape of the pier columns and adds strength and ductility to the column.
A large metal form for the pier column is being lifted into place. After the reinforcement steel cage for the column has been erected, the forms are installed to hold the proper shape of the cast-in-place concrete pier columns. The forms remain in place until the concrete hardens and develops adequate strength.

The pier column formwork is being pieced together on a barge prior to placing the previously erected column reinforcement cage in the correct location. There are separate elements of the form for the column: straight portion, rounded face and top.
With all the formwork in place, a concrete pump truck is stationed on a temporary work platform to pour the concrete for the pier column.
