Why is this work necessary?
A. This section of First Street serves as a connector between I-280 and Market Street, which provides access to various educational institutions and businesses in the University Heights area. By adding an additional lane in each direction, and left turn slots at some intersecting streets, 26,000 vehicles per day can flow more smoothly within this portion of First Street.

Are local residents and officials involved?
A.

Local residents, officials and the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) have met during the planning and development of this project.

   

Q.

How does this project affect pedestrians and bicyclists?
A. One sidewalk and access at either end of the project will be maintained throughout the construction process for pedestrians and bicyclists. Signs and barriers will be installed to protect and advise them throughout the project.

What will NJDOT do to minimize motorist hassles?
A.

For traffic control during construction, NJDOT will:

  • maintain one lane in each direction on First Street,
  • invoke left turn restrictions from First Street onto Sussex and Central Avenues and onto Dickerson and New Streets during rush hours to minimize delays,
  • place detours online on the NJDOT Web site, and
  • place detours on variable message signs within and outside the work area.

What is the cost; what are the beginning and completion dates?
A.

The $6.5 million project began in fall of 2006 and should be completed in the summer of 2008.

Who is the contractor and resident engineer?
A. IEW Construction Group of Trenton, NJ is the contractor; NJDOT’s Marco Vallejo is the resident engineer.
