Policy on use of ITE standards

The Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) has published engineering design practices. These references may be approved for use in conjunction with various NJDOT manuals. ITE publications represent nationwide standards which do not always satisfy New Jersey conditions. When standards differ, the instructions in NJDOT manuals shall govern except on Interstate highways.

ITE standards & documents
  • Guidelines for the Design and Application of Speed Humps: Recommended Practices of the Institute of Transportation Engineers
  • This proposed recommended practice provides guidelines for the design and application of speed humps, a roadway geometric design feature intended to physically reduce vehicle speeds. Other types of geometric design features that are not addressed in this document but could be considered in a residential traffic management program include raised intersections, rumble strips, pavement width reductions, traffic circles, medians, diverters, forced-turn channelization and culdesacs. These features are designed to attract special attention, reduce vehicle speeds and/or physically restrict or prevent vehicle movement along a roadway or within a neighborhood. On existing residential streets, these geometric design features generally should be installed only after less restrictive actions have been considered and in no event should their use be intended to allow or encourage the use of public streets as playgrounds.
