The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is part of the United States Department of Transportation with offices in each state. The New Jersey Division office is responsible for administering the federal aid program in New Jersey. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is part of the United States Department of Transportation with offices in every state.

Its primary goal is to reduce the number and severity of commercial motor vehicle crashes and fatalities on our nation's highways.

The FMCSA enforces federal safety, hazardous materials movement and security regualtions within the transportation industry. Federal grants are given and monitored to enhance highway safety, technology and enforcement.
