Speed Limits for State Roads


Route US 46

(a)

The rate of speed designated for the certain parts of State Highway Route US 46 described in this subsection are hereby established and adopted as the maximum legal rate of speed:

1.

In Warren County:

i. In the Township of Knowlton:

(1)

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 45 MPH between Route I-80, Route US 46 and Route NJ 94 Interchange and 1,900 feet east of Walnut Road (approximate mileposts 0.0 to 1.39); thence

(B) Zone 2: 50 MPH between 1,900 feet east of Walnut Road and 800 feet west of the Erie Lackawanna Railroad overpass (approximate mileposts 1.39 to 2.40); thence

(C) Zone 3: 45 MPH between 800 feet west of the Erie Lackawanna Railroad overpass and Knowlton Road, except for a 35 MPH speed limit when passing through the Knowlton Township Elementary School zone while "35 MPH When Flashing" signs are operating during recess or while children are going to or leaving school during opening or closing hours (approximate mileposts 2.40 to 3.85); thence

(D) Zone 4: 50 MPH between Knowlton Road and the Knowlton Township-White Township corporate line (approximate mileposts 3.85 to 5.50); thence

ii. In the Township of White:

(1)

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 50 MPH between the Knowlton Township-White Township corporate line and 1,900 feet west of Route NJ 31, except for a 35 MPH speed limit when passing through the White Township Elementary School zone during recess when the presence of children is clearly visible from the roadway or while children are going to or leaving school during opening or closing hours (approximate mileposts 5.50 to 9.67); thence

(B) Zone 2: 45 MPH between 1,900 feet west of Route NJ 31 and 550 feet east of Route NJ 31 (approximate mileposts 9.67 to 10.13); thence

(C) Zone 3: 50 MPH between 550 feet east of Route NJ 31 and the White Township-Liberty Township corporate line (approximate mileposts 10.13 to 12.60); thence

iii. In the Township of Liberty:

(1)

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 50 MPH between the White Township-Liberty Township corporate line and the Liberty Township-Independence Township corporate line (approximate mileposts 12.60 to 15.78); thence

iv. In the Township of Independence:

(1)

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 40 MPH between the Liberty Township-Independence Township corporate line and 650 feet east of Baker Mill Road, except for a 25 MPH speed limit when passing through the Central School zone while "25 MPH When Flashing" signs are operating during recess or while children are going to or leaving school during opening or closing hours (approximate mileposts 15.78 to 17.75); thence

(B) Zone 2: 45 MPH between 650 feet east of Baker Mill Road and the Independence Township-Town of Hackettstown corporate line (approximate mileposts 17.75 to 20.67); thence

v. In the Town of Hackettstown:

(1)

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 35 MPH between the Independence Township-Hackettstown Town corporate line and 250 feet east of Prospect Street (approximate mileposts 20.67 to 21.01); thence

(B) Zone 2: 30 MPH between 250 feet east of Prospect Street and Town of Hackettstown-Washington Township corporate line (Musconetcong River) (approximate mileposts 21.01 to 21.83); thence

In Morris County:

i. In the Township of Mount Olive:

(1)

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 30 MPH between Town of Hackettstown-Mount Olive Township corporate line (Musconetcong River) and 180 feet west of Drakestown Road (formerly Old Mine Road) (approximate mileposts 21.83 to 21.92); thence

(B) Zone 2: 35 MPH between 180 feet west of Drakestown Road (formerly Old Mine Road) and the westernmost Mount Olive Township-Washington Township corporate line (approximate mileposts 21.92 to 22.18); thence

(C) Zone 3: 45 MPH between the easternmost Washington Township-Mount Olive Township corporate line and Naughright Road-Sand Shore Road (approximate mileposts 23.38 to 24.65); thence

(D) Zone 4: 50 MPH between Naughright Road-Sand Shore Road and Manor House Road (approximate mileposts 24.65 to 26.31); thence

(E) Zone 5: 45 MPH between Manor House Road and Mount Olive Township-Netcong Borough corporate line (approximate mileposts 26.31 to 29.40); thence

ii. In the Township of Washington:

(1)

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 35 MPH between the westernmost Mount Olive Township-Washington Township corporate line and the Mine Brook Bridge (approximate mileposts 22.18 to 22.47); thence

(B) Zone 2: 45 MPH between the Mine Brook Bridge and the easternmost Washington Township-Mount Olive Township corporate line (approximate mileposts 22.47 to 23.38); thence

iii. In the Borough of Netcong:

(1)

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 45 MPH between the Mount Olive Township-Netcong Borough corporate line and 300 feet west of Flanders Road (approximate mileposts 29.40 to 29.61); thence

(B) Zone 2: 40 MPH between 300 feet west of Flanders Road and 250 feet east of Flanders Road (approximate mileposts 29.61 to 29.72); thence

(C) Zone 3: 35 MPH between 250 feet east of Flanders Road and 670 feet east of Down Street except for 25 miles per hour when passing through the Saint Michael's School zone while "25 MPH when flashing" signs are operating during recess when the presence of children is clearly visible from the roadway or while children are going to or leaving school, during opening or closing hours (approximate mileposts 29.72 to 30.10); thence

(D) Zone 4: 40 MPH between 670 feet east of Down Street and the Netcong Borough-Roxbury Township corporate line (approximate mileposts 30.10 to 30.43); thence

iv. In the Township of Roxbury:

(1)

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 40 MPH between the Netcong Borough-Roxbury Township corporate line and Barron Street (approximate mileposts 30.43 to 30.56); thence

(B) Zone 2: 50 MPH between Barron Street and the Route US 46-Route NJ 10 traffic circle (approximate mileposts 30.56 to 33.33); thence

(C) Zone 3: 45 MPH between the Route NJ 10-Route US 46 traffic circle and the Black River Bridge (approximate mileposts 33.33 to 34.22); thence

(D) Zone 4: 40 MPH between the Black River Bridge and Dell Avenue (approximate mileposts 34.22 to 35.03); thence

(E) Zone 5: 45 MPH between Dell Avenue and the Roxbury Township-Mine Hill Township corporate line (approximate mileposts 35.03 to 35.30); thence

v. In the Township of Mine Hill:

(1)

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 45 MPH between the Roxbury Township-Mine Hill Township corporate line and Williams Street (approximate mileposts 35.30 to 35.97); thence

(B) Zone 2: 40 MPH between William Street and 200 feet east of Randolph Avenue, except for a 25 MPH speed limit when passing through the Route US 46 school zone during recess or while children are going to or leaving school during opening or closing hours (approximate mileposts 35.97 to 36.49); thence

(C) Zone 3: 45 MPH between 200 feet east of Randolph Avenue and the Mine Hill Township-Wharton Borough corporate line (approximate mileposts 36.49 to 37.20); thence

vi. In the Borough of Wharton:

(1)

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 45 MPH between the Mine Hill Township-Wharton Borough corporate line and the Wharton Borough-Town of Dover corporate line (Drake Avenue) (approximate mileposts 37.20 to 37.28); thence

vii. In the Town of Dover:

(1)

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 40 MPH between the Wharton Borough-Town of Dover corporate line (Drake Avenue) and the bridge over the Central Railroad of New Jersey (approximate mileposts 37.28 to 38.12); thence

(B) Zone 2: 35 MPH between the bridge over the Central Railroad of New Jersey and Perry Street, except for a 25 MPH speed limit when passing through the East Dover Elementary School zone (Belmont Avenue to Trenton Avenue) while "25 MPH When Flashing" signs are operating during recess or while children are going to or leaving school during opening or closing hours (approximate mileposts 38.12 to 39.08); thence

(C) Zone 3: 40 MPH between Perry Street and the Town of Dover-Rockaway Township corporate line (approximate mileposts 39.08 to 39.42); thence

viii. In the Township of Rockaway:

(1)

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 40 MPH between the Town of Dover-Rockaway Township corporate line and the Rockaway Township-Rockaway Borough corporate line (approximate mileposts 39.42 to 39.90); thence

ix. In the Borough of Rockaway:

(A) Zone 1: 40 MPH between the Rockaway Township-Rockaway Borough corporate line and the Rockaway Borough-Denville Township corporate line (approximate mileposts 39.90 to 41.90); thence

x. In the Township of Denville:

(A) Zone 1: 40 MPH between the Rockaway Borough-Denville Township corporate line and 500 feet east of Route NJ 53, except for a 25 MPH speed limit when passing through the Saint Mary School zone, during recess when the presence of children is clearly visible from the roadway and when children are going to or leaving school during opening or closing hours (approximate mileposts 41.90 to 43.12); thence

(B) Zone 2: 45 MPH between 500 feet east of Route NJ 53 and the Denville Township-Mountain Lakes Borough corporate line (approximate mileposts 43.12 to 43.85); thence

xi. In the Borough of Mountain Lakes:

(1)

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 45 MPH between the Denville Township-Mountain Lakes Borough corporate line and the westernmost Mountain Lakes Borough-Parsippany-Troy Hills Township corporate line (approximate mileposts 43.82 to 44.70); thence

For the eastbound direction of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 45 MPH between the westernmost Mountain Lakes Borough-Parsippany-Troy Hills Township corporate line and Lackawanna Avenue (approximate mileposts 44.70 to 44.83); thence

(B) Zone 2: 50 MPH between Lackawanna Avenue and the easternmost Parsippany-Troy Hills Township-Montville Township corporate line (approximate mileposts 44.83 to 45.40); thence

xii. In the Township of Parsippany-Troy Hills:

For the westbound direction of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 45 MPH between the westernmost Mountain Lakes Borough-Parsippany-Troy Hills Township corporate line and Lackawanna Avenue (approximate mileposts 44.70 to 44.83); thence

(B) Zone 2: 50 MPH between Lackawanna Avenue and the easternmost Parsippany-Troy Hills Township-Montville Township corporate line (approximate mileposts 44.83 to 45.40); thence

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 50 MPH between the easternmost Parsippany-Troy Hills Township-Montville Township corporate line and the Parsippany-Troy Hills Township-Montville Township corporate line (approximate mileposts 45.40 to 50.37); thence

xiii. In the Township of Montville:

NOTE: State Highway Route US 46 is coincident with State Highway Route US 1&9 (approximate milepost 62.80 to 64.88) from approximate mileposts 72.09 to 74.18.  See Route US 1&9 for speed limits in this section.

NOTE: State Highway Route US 46 is coincident with State Highway Route I-95 (New Jersey Turnpike) and under Port Authority of New York & New Jersey (PANYNJ) jurisdiction from approximate mileposts 74.09 to 75.34 (end of route) (New York – New Jersey State line).
