Historic Roadways
The New Jersey Department of Transportation
(NJDOT) along with the New
Jersey Division Office of
the Federal Highway Administration
(FHWA) and the New Jersey
Historic Preservation Office
(NJHPO), as a result of regulatory
issues, conducted a study
on historic roadways in New
Jersey. This study can be
used by consultants and others
to identify and evaluate
historic roadways in New
Jersey. Additionally, a set
of design guidelines has
been developed that merges
engineering basics with historic
preservation.
The Historic Roadway Study
was developed to focus
on roads with statewide
significance. This study
can also be used by municipalities,
counties or other agencies
that maintain roads to
identify potentially historic
roadways under their jurisdiction.
