Community Outreach

Community participation is an important part of New Jersey Department of Transportation's (NJDOT) projects.

The principal elements of the Public Involvement Plan (PIAP) are:

  • Effective communication and coordination with local governments, the general public and public agencies
  • Inventive strategies to inform the public and mutual dialogue on transportation improvement options which maximize benefits and minimize impacts
  • Regulatory agreement which ensures participation is broad and complete (Environmental Justice, Section 106 HP)

The Concept Development phase of the project includes outreach to members of the public in the transportation improvement development process and their comments and concerns throughout the project phases. Community outreach strategies include:

  • Local Officials Briefings
  • Meetings with Community Advisory Committee (CAC)
  • Public Open House and Public Information Centers
  • Web site
  • Newspaper announcements and mailings
